Yes, it is possible to obtain a birth certificate for free in some cases. 

However, the availability of free birth certificates varies depending on the state or country in which you were born.
In the United States, some states offer free birth certificates to individuals who are experiencing financial hardship. For example, in California, you can obtain a free birth certificate if you are currently receiving public assistance. 

In New York City, you can obtain a free birth certificate if you were born in the city and your parents were also residents of the city at the time of your birth .

In other countries, such as Canada, you may be able to obtain a free birth certificate if you are a member of a First Nation or Inuit community .
